Directed
Evolution: Philosophy, Theory, and Practice,
by Boris Zlotin and Alla Zusman
ISBN 1-928747-06-X
Read
the review in TRIZ Journal
Although
a recent application of TRIZ, Directed Evolution™ has been in
development since the mid-1980s. Taken as a whole, DE comprises
a complex of works related to the management and control of
technological evolution. This book presents the recent
theoretical and methodological findings that have resulted from
consideration of the philosophy and potential of DE on a global
scale, and from the practical experience gained from DE projects
conducted in various industries ranging from chemical,
automotive, consumer products and software development.
Also
discussed is the vital role of DE in the global processes of
managing evolution – i.e., for controlling the future. The
step-by-step DE process is presented, and selected (and
simplified) tools suitable for conducting DE on systems of
medium complexity are described. A list of frequently asked
questions and a bibliography are also included. 103 pages.
Available in
pdf: $30.
About the Authors: Alla
Zusman and Boris Zlotin are the world’s foremost authorities
on TRIZ and the Ideation/TRIZ Methodology (also known as I-TRIZ).
Together, they are responsible for the U.S. adaptation of the
methodology, developing new applications for solving scientific
and business problems and creating the theoretical base for TRIZ
software products.

Tools for Failure and Risk Analysis: An Introduction to
Anticipatory Failure Determination (AFD) and the Theory of
Scenario Structuring,
by Stan Kaplan, Svetlana Visnepolschi, Boris Zlotin, and Alla
Zusman
ISBN 1-928747-05-1
An excellent introduction to Anticipatory Failure Determination™
(AFD™), an application of TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem
Solving) for failure analysis and prediction. The authors also
define a subset of risk analysis called the Theory of Scenario
Structuring, and offer a view of AFD as an application of this
theory, comparing it to traditional techniques such as FMEA and
HAZOP. The AFD framework is described as a valuable method for
extracting and applying information based on the world’s
accumulated experience in the operation of systems and
processes, thus providing a means to avoid repeating costly (and
often tragic) mistakes. 83 pages.
Available in pdf: $25

About the Authors: Dr. Stan Kaplan, an engineer
and applied mathematician, is a leading expert in the discipline
known as Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA), having made
significant contributions to its theory, language, philosophy,
and methodology. Dr. Kaplan was one of the first American
scientists to become interested in TRIZ.
¨
Svetlana Visnepolschi pioneered
(along with Boris Zlotin) the application of TRIZ prediction
methods for technical and non-technical systems and is the
creator of the AFD software. ¨
Boris Zlotin, one of the
world’s premier TRIZ scientists, continues to lead in the
advancement of the methodology. ¨
Alla Zusman has been teaching TRIZ since 1981, and is
responsible for the U.S. adaptation of TRIZ as well as the
